Tokyo travel news: Seven of the best things to do in Japan’s diverse capital city

Tokyo is a diverse city, blending rich history and culture with futuristic cityscapes.

With plenty of unique districts all offering different opportunities, Tokyo is a suitable destination for an array of different travellers.

Here, Travel News Blitz’s Sam Condy breaks down seven fantastic things to do in the Japanese metropolis.

Shibuya Crossing

The world-famous pedestrian scramble, where up to 3,000 cross at once.

Located in front of the Shibuya Station, there are some fantastic viewing points nearby to watch all the chaos unfold.

Mag's Park Rooftop and the nearby Starbucks both serve as great places to relax and enjoy some of the best people-watching on earth.

Tsukiji Outer Market

Tsukiji Outer Market is a vibrant and sprawling marketplace, specialising in all things Japanese seafood.

One of the largest wholesale fish and seafood markets worldwide, it is a must-see for any food fanatics visiting the city.

There are plenty of local delicacies on offer, such as tamagoyaki (Japanese omelette) and fresh sashimi bowls.

Asakusa and Senso-ji Temple

Senso-ji Temple is the city's oldest Buddhist temple, dating back to the 7th century.

Located within the district of Asakusa, travellers can easily make a day out of a visit to the temple.

Asakusa retains the vibe of an older Tokyo, with plenty of Japanese craft shops and street-food stalls to soak in the local culture.

Perfect for shopping, eating, and taking in Tokyo's vibrant youth culture.

When you need a break from the chaos, make sure to visit the nearby Meiji Shrine, a tranquil oasis surrounded by forested paths.

Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden

Originating in the 17th century, this peaceful greenspace is located in the heart of the bustling Shinjuku.

Originally the residence of the Naito Family during the Edo period, this large outdoor landscape is filled with a variety of different garden designs, inspired by greenspaces from around the globe.

Odaiba and TeamLab Planets

A futuristic entertainment hub featuring shopping malls, VR arcades, and the impressive Unicorn Gundam statue, Odaiba is located on an artificial island in Tokyo Bay.

TeamLab Planets is a temporary, digital art exhibition near Odaiba. Specialising in 'body immersive' art, TeamLab Planets is recognised by Guinness World Records as the most visited museum in the world.
