Munich Travel News: The seven best things to do in the home of Bayern Munich

Home of Euro 2024, Germany has cemented itself as a fantastic tourism destination.

With sprawling hills and jam-packed cities, there is an almost endless amount of options for those looking to visit the ‘land of the people’.

Here, Travel News Blitz has picked out seven of the very best things to do in the Bavarian capital.

Oktoberfest

The world's largest Volksfest is held annually every year within the city. Starting mid/late September, the festival runs to the first Sunday in October.

Essentially Disneyland for adults, the festival features a travelling carnival and an endless supply of beer, making Munich the perfect place for a post-summer getaway.

Augustiner-Keller

Sticking to the theme of beer, Augustiner-Keller is a mammoth Bavarian tavern and garden that offers buffet-style Bavarian cuisine and locally-brewed Augustiner Lager.

Situated right next to Munich’s main train station, the traditional restaurant is the perfect place to kick back and relax after a long day of travelling.

Pro Tip: The beers come in litre-sized steins, so pacing yourself is necessary!

Allianz Arena

Home of Germany’s most successful football team, the Allianz Arena is a must-visit for any football fan.

With 33 league titles to their name, Bayern Munich are heads and shoulders above the competition.

There is no better place to take in the history of the world-famous outfit than their home stadium.

Featuring an incredible in-house museum, and an in-depth stadium tour, there’s plenty to see to make an afternoon out of your trip to the Allianz.

Marienplatz

In a city full of modern architecture and technological advancement, Munich's central square will leave you in awe of its timeless architecture and breathtaking beauty.

Once the central meeting point of the city's most important streets, the historic square is now the beating heart of Munich's old town.

With restaurants and nightlife galore, the Marienplatz is the perfect place to cap off a busy day in the city.

Olympiapark

Constructed for the 1972 Summer Olympics, Olympiapark is now the city's primary greenspace and relaxation centre.

Fancy a relaxing day out? Grab some pretzels and set up shop for a picnic you will never forget.

Feeling more adventurous? Perhaps a zipline over the former Olympic stadium is more to your fancy.

Whatever you are after, there is something for everyone in Olympiapark.

BMW Museum

Calling all petrolheads! Munich’s BMW museum is the prime spot to take in the very best German automotive engineering has to offer.

Filled with some of BMW’s most famous vehicles, learn about the history of Germany's iconic car manufacturer.

From classics to concepts, there’s enough chrome to make a magpie jealous.

Munich Residenz

Arguably Munich’s most important historical structure. The Munich Residenz served as seat of government and residence of the Bavarian royals from 1508 to 1918.

With over 150 rooms, prepare for hours of ogling at the intricate designs and plenty of ‘how on earth did they build that’ moments

Audio guides are also available for those who want to further indulge themselves in the building's rich history.
